Choosing between a printer and a copier in Boston?
Consider this before you decide on running out and purchasing a color laser printer. Sometimes a color copier may be a better decision.
What we have found is that for color laser printers you’re good up to about 1,000 prints per month. If your volume gets beyond that number then a color copier ends up being a better fit.
Here is an example that may shed some light on the situation. We recently worked with someone who was looking at the Xerox Phaser 7500 and they were needing to do 2000 prints per month. So we’re looking at about %.11 per color print. Here is the catch, that number is based on the standard 20% coverage. At this point you really need to understand what you’re printing. If it’s a lot of coverage then you may truly be paying up to $.66 per print, or $1.28 per tabloid print!
After talking with the customer about what they would be using the printer for, we recommended the Xerox WorkCentre 7525. With this copier color is about $.075 per print no matter what the coverage. In this case the customer was going to be doing high coverage printing so here is what the math looked like. $.075 X 2,000 = $150 for the Xerox WorkCentre 7525 or $1.28 X 2,000 = $2560 for the Xerox Phaser 7500. This is a pretty extreme example but it’s a real example, sometimes people make big mistakes because they are too focused on initial cost.
